Child Rights in Focus

NGOs share good practice in working through schools
By Jo Monson, HIV/AIDS Programme

The Children's Institute, in partnership with the South African Democratic Teachers' Union, recently hosted a workshop with non-governmental organisations which work with schools and which have excellent practice in responding to vulnerable children in the context of HIV/AIDS. Presentations, role play, small group work and hat-making created the opportunity to reflect on lessons learnt in the field, build partnerships and share materials.

The workshop is part of a series of action research events that will inform the development of a capacity-building programme for schools to respond to children in need. The Schools as Nodes of Care and Support Project is also in the process of compiling a national directory of organisations which work with or in schools to support vulnerable children.

If your organisation would like to be included in this directory, or to find out more about the project, please contact Programme Manager Wanjiru Mukoma.
