Watch out for the 2007/2008 edition of the South African Child Gauge which celebrates the new Children’s Act and highlights some implementation challenges which need to be addressed to make this groundbreaking legislation a reality.
The Children's Act (as amended) is the primary law aimed at giving effect to children’s constitutional right to social services and the South African Child Gauge 2007/2008 provides in-depth information on some of the pioneering aspects of this new law. Through a focus on children’s right to social services, this edition comments on and assesses the policies, laws, budgets and human resources that need attention to give effect to the right to social services and to enable the maximum impact for vulnerable children.
The Children Count – Abantwana Babalulekile section of the publication continues to provide updated statistics on the demography, care arrangements and health of South Africa’s children, as well as children’s access to social assistance, education, water, sanitation, electricity and housing. A new feature in this section is that data, in most cases, are tracked over a five-year period to reflect on emerging trends in the conditions of children and their access to services.
